2009 Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter Scholarship Winners

Each year, the Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television arts and Sciences awards four $1500.00 scholarships to deserving students of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University.

This year, the recipients are Shui (Kenneth) Wong; Samantha Boatman; Daryl Bjoraas; and Josh Frigerio.

Since being accepted into the Walter Cronkite School at Arizona State University (ASU), Shui Wong has put forth his best efforts to ensure that he learns as much as he can. While at ASU, Shui has been involved with Cronkite NewsWatch and the student chapter of NATAS. He has also had internships with KAET-TV and KPHO-TV as he tries to hone his skills as a professional television news reporter.
Upon graduation from the Cronkite School, Shui intends to work as a television reporter and use his experience in broadcasting to report the important news of our country and our world to the people at large.

At ASU, Samantha Boatman has enjoyed internships at KPNX Channel 12 and worked as a freelance photographer during Super Bowl activities here in Phoenix where her pictures were posted to 12news.azcentral.com. She has also done internships at KNXV Channel 15 and Know 99 Television, the education channel for the City of Phoenix.
Samantha’s goal is to be a trusted news writer. She ultimately wants to start her career as a general assignment news reporter covering all kinds of news. Samantha had the opportunity of hearing Aaron Brown speak about his experience working at CNN on Sept. 11. His experience gave Samantha much inspiration. After Samantha fulfills her dream of being a reporter, she would love to be a part of an investigative team.

Daryl Bjoraas has had extensive experience while at Arizona State serving as a news anchor/reporter for Sun Devil TV. He has served as vice president of the student chapter of NATAS and was a Sports Radio Analyst on The Blaze 1260 AM in Tempe.
Daryl’s goal is to one day have a career in which he can cover both the news and the weather in a top 25 market in the U.S. Pursuing a demanding and diverse career such as journalism at Arizona State University has allowed Daryl to demonstrate his abilities of being a leader as well as showcasing his abilities to succeed at his ambitions.

During his tenure at ASU, Josh Frigerio has been a member of many professional associations including the Society of Professional Journalism (SPJ), National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), and the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA).
At the Walter Cronkite School, Josh has fully immersed himself into its rigorous course work, taking full advantage of every opportunity that has been presented to him and he has grown more confident as a journalist. Josh’s focus is to become a prominent and well-respected reporter who reflects objectivity and accuracy. His ultimate goal is to be an international correspondent for CNN exposing the stories of genocide happening in the eastern hemisphere.

Congratulations to our NATAS 2009 scholarship recipients!
